*&^%# Mercury in Retrograde
Quote de jour

Do you feel like you've swallowed a crazy pill? Everyone and everything wonky? Computer glitches, cell phones going haywire, mis-communication, cancellations, delays? Well, you can blame it on Mercury in Retrograde. It's the cosmic trickster at play again. In astrology, the planet Mercury rules communication and all things techie, mechanical or electrical. Three times a year, Mercury appears to jog backwards or retrograde for about three weeks. It's an illusion but the effects are very real. The current retrograde began today, September 24th and will last until October 15th. I usually begin the feel the effects about a week in advance with chaos reigning supreme. I don't usually expect smooth sailing until a couple weeks after. In this case, October 31st.
From years of tracking it and learning the hard way, this is what I do and don't do during a Mercury retrograde.
I know there will be delays, glitches and mistakes, so I double check everything and allow extra time to run errands and to arrive in time for appointments. I don't travel unless it's an emergency. I would not schedule medical tests, dental work or God forbid, surgery.
I slow down, do less, reflect on current projects, future goals. It's not the time to begin new projects or relationships, sign contracts, to buy anything, especially computers, electronic or electrical equipment, cars or real estate. You can, but odds are you will experience problems and delays. I won't bore you with the hair pulling glitches I experienced simply writing and posting this blog entry. I had a cute photo but it refused to upload, of course.
The upside? Mercury in retrograde is an excellent time take make plans, research, organize and clean up files, closets, wardrobes and edit creative projects. It's helpful to know the dates of retrogrades in advance for planning important meetings, vacations, weddings, parties etc. It's comforting to know why the world is falling apart arounf you. With misunderstandings easy and mis-communication rampant, I take extra care sending e-mails. My speel check gets an extra work out! To avoid arguments, I take extra care to watch my words with everyone but especially to those close to me.
Some people are more effected than others from a Mercury retrograde. Mercury is the ruling planet of Gemini and Virgo. If that's your sun sign or have Gemini or Virgo anywhere else in your astrological chart, chances are you will feel it more acutely. Those lucky enough to be born with Mercury retrograde in their natal charts (18% of us) are not effected as much and enjoy increased clarity of thought during retrogrades.
I've learned to laugh about the glitches even when they're not funny and not to stress as much. Breathing is good too.
