You say Columbus Day, I say Thanksgiving

Quote de jour
"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it."

Every American holiday makes me feel more Canadian. It's Columbus Day today which has no meaning for me. Columbus didn't discover America. On October 12, 1492, he stuck his flag of discovery somewhere in the Bahamas. For me, it's another Hallmark holiday. The newspapers are chock full of advertising for retail sales; 40, 50, woo hoo! up to 80% off, but I don't really need any thing.

What I want most is what I can't have, and that is to celebrate another holiday today. It's the Canadian Thanksgiving today. I won't be sitting, eating turkey with family and friends but do feel grateful for many things. As a blogger, I'm grateful for every comment I get. Today, I'm doubly grateful. I received a lovely comment today from Michael Tonello, the author of the witty and sassy best seller, Bringing Home the Birkin. He reinforced my belief in the value of saying thank-you. You can bet your bottom dollar, when I get published, I will be paying it forward and doing the same. Thanks Michael! The snappy Web site for his hilarious book is http://www.bringinghomethebirkin.com

To my Canadian family, friends and fans, have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Again, lovely shot to accompany these thoughts on gratitude... I enjoy Thanksgiving because it is an excuse to get together with people I like and eat good food... However, the concept behind Thanksgiving (Canadian or otherwise) is something I try to be aware of and inclusive of Every day. It isn't always easy to remember to be grateful in the midst of an ordinary or especially stressful day, but it does make each day special, appreciated... it brings a sense of the extraordinary to everyday life that is most welcome... and no, I've never had my palm read lol.

    wishing you laughter

I know exactly how you feel. The two holidays (Can and Am Thanksgiving) are so close together yet so far apart. When I was in Canada, I got used to not celebrating American Thanksgiving and celebrated Canadian instead.

After returning here, I consider American Thanksgiving to be one of my two favorite holidays.

Columbus Day I consider only a great 3 day weekend.

But yes, if you miss Canadian Thanksgiving, it is just not the same, nor is American Thanksgiving the same for you.

My sister was here but left yesterday. Her kids are visiting their dad in Atlanta, the Canadian who hated the US and said he'd never live here. He sold his company and it is based in Atlanta. They made him VP.

Thanks Layla for such a beautiful blog today. A visit to the land is better than a visit to Tiffany's even (and thats pretty high!)...because its a place you can go, at anytime and brings such joy.

Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving from another proud Canuck and a Happy Columbus Day to all the Americans...regardless of where that flag was stuck .. - A.
