Secret Life of Bees
Quote de jour
"Floats like butterfly, stings like a bee."

That sums up my feelings about the film, The Secret Life of Bees based on Sue Monk Kidd's best-selling novel of the same title. I'm always nervous seeing film adaptations of wonderful books, for good reason. The films often don't live up to the magic of the book. My fears were brushed aside instantly by the lush, nostalgic cinematography. Within the first few minutes, the film sucked me into 1960's civil rights era in Georgia and didn't let go. The film is sweet without being sappy, but do bring a box of tissues.
A group of five or six African Americans sat directly behind. They talked back to the screen in a running commentary, in accents more authentic than the actors. "Ooh, that's nasty, he DID not! You go girl! Uh huh, She looks good in that purple dress, Oh yeah! nooo, sob..." Normally, I would have shushed them but this Greek chorus added real emotions. They didn't just watch the film, they were a part of it. Any writer or director could not have asked for more. I predict Oscar nods.

Oddly enough, I was just thinking last night that I will probably give that film a miss for a few months/years lol. I went to see Journey to the Center of the Earth and noticed the poster for this film... I love a good drama, but lately I've been avoiding any of them that deal too largely with the various pains and griefs found in life.. I just need a break lol I've got enough in my own life without watching someone else's. This is a truly lovely pic you've placed with this blog though!
wishing you laughter
