What I'm Reading This Week (Nov.10)
Quote de jour
Medicine for the soul. ~ The inscription over the door of the ancient library at Thebes.
Ah, libraries. My love affair continues, now on Sundays. Apparently I'm not the only one. Library memberships across the country are up substantially. My guess is the floundering economy.
It was a smaller than usual haul this week. Obama is the cover boy everywhere. I'm thrilled that Rolling Stone has launched a smaller-sized magazine. Much easier to carry, while saving some trees. The cover portrait of Obama is not flattering. Too cheeky. I mean that figuratively. Martha Stewart, who is the cover girl every month at her magazine always air-brushed to perfection. She'll still look 39 when she's 99. I can't wait to dive into the lush, design porn of Architectural Digest. A guilty pleasure I've enjoyed since eeek, 1977. Ditto, Cosmopolitan. I know I've probably too old to read it anymore, but everyone needs a literary equivalant of a twinkie on occaison.

It's rare for me to put away a book I'm enjoying, but I did just that for Amy Bloom's lovely novel, Away. Obviously this isn't a library book or I'd shudder at the thought of the library fines. I began reading it months ago. It sagged a bit in the middle and I'm getting back into it now.
I needed an injection of humor this week. What better than the insanely funny Chelsea Handler and her cleverly titled book of essays; Are You There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea. She reminds me a funnier, female version of David Sedaris.

Oh my word, I loved learning about Chelsea's book. It obviously resonated with me as the book "are you there god its me margaret" I often wondered if someone would reinvent that one - and now its here in the title form anyways. thanks for putting a smile on my face today. alicia xo

"a funnier female David Sedaris"? Wow, I gotta check this woman out. Sedaris is always good for an underwear change.

Interesting post and blog. Relevantly, many prominent experts and publications have pointed out that Obama is part of Generation Jones, born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and GenXers.
This link takes you to a page you may find interesting: it has, among other things, excerpts from publications like Newsweek and the New York Times, and videos with over 25 top pundits, all talking specifically about Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser:

Thanks for the link. Yikes, so I'm not a baby boomer anymore?
