What I'm Reading This Week Or Not (Nov.30, 2008)

Quote de Jour
"A culture is made -- or destroyed by its articulate voices."
                                                                                          ~
Ayn Rand

Judging by this week's pile of words and images, it's toss up. Tough times. Promises to keep, indeed. Where do we start The proliferation of Obama covers have shifted from billboard-sized head shots to the smaller and more the subtle and ironic. You don't need to be psychic to make predictions of more turkeys, bows and the color red on covers, between now and the new year.

On the cover of her magazine, Oprah asks her favorite question, "What do you know for sure?" I know for sure is I'm not too thin for TV and James Bond is our only hope. Just kidding. What I know for sure is that all we have is this moment. Things that I thought I knew for sure, have crumbled to dust. It's down to the old joke of death and taxes, folks.

Book jacket design fascinates me. From now on, I'll feature front and back covers. Duh, why didn't I think of that before? My two books this week are both biographies. I haven't read any in ages and decided on two Hollywood guys;Tom Cruise and Tony Curtis. Acting is the only thing they have in comman. I'm curious about the unauthorized bio on Cruise by Andrew Morton. I'll try to keep an open mind about whether Cruise is crazy or crazy like a fox.

I'm looking forward to diving into the Tony Curtis memoir. I've always liked his acting. How can you resist Some Like It Hot? But what I like more, is his ability to re-invent himself. So many movie stars self-destruct once the aging proces begins. Not Tony. He followed his passion for art and became a top-notch painter. In more recent years, he founded The Shiloh Horse Rescue, http://www.ShilohHorseRescue.com a non-profit foundation that rehabs abused or neglected horses for adoption.

    Wrong choice for a quote...
Rand's disciple, Alan Greenspan, has already made great strides in destroying the financial underpinnings of society. Culture will soon follow

Ayn Rand I can do without despite her being the original inspiration behind my choosing the name of Kira after high school.

Oddly enough, Some Like It Hot became quite a different film for me after reading The Sociopath Next Door... Curtis was good at what he did though, no doubt. I've gotten a great deal of enjoyment out of Jamie Lee's choice in roles over the years too. I do like a good bio though, no matter whom the subject might be. Wishing you laughter
