What I'm Reading This Week (Dec. 8, 2008)

Quote de jour
"Magazine all to frequently lead to books and should be regarded by the prudent as the heavy petting of literature."
                                                                                                                                                                                       ~Fran Lebowitz

I had to laugh when I read that. Carrying my stack of magazines doubles as exercise for me, especially this week.

The Obama covers continue with a cute New Yorker cartoon of prospective dogs. I hope they opt for a mutt from the pound. It's nice to see Michelle Obama on a cover. Apparently she's slated to appear on the cover of  Vogue in 2009. If I only had a few minutes for a news oriented mag, I'd  pick The Week. It's the ADHD of magazines. It's perfect fodder if your have to bone up for dinner party conversation. There are tidbits of funny to freaky human interest stories, current events in bite-size portions and global pop culture.

I loved Rolling Stone's article 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Conde Nast's Traveler is my favorite purveyor of armchair travel. This issue, made me dream of going to India. Thrift and bargain hunting articles continue to abound. Sexiest Movies Ever? I've seen a whopping 90% of them and don't entirely agree with the list. I always come across drool-worthy recipes but rarely whip them up. Too many ingredients and I don't like shopping with a list.

My two books of the week are an idiosyncratic choice. Last week's bio picks inspired two more bios. The Tom Cruise bio held no surprises, except for a choice tidbit: Cruise and Katie live in separate wings of a Beverly hills mansion. The reason they don't share the marital bed? He snores. Okay. It sounds like the arrangement in The Duchess by Amanda Foreman, the bio about Lady Georgiana Spencer, the great-great-great-great aunt of Diana, Princess of Wales.
I saw the film by the same title recently and enjoyed it. Yes, that is Keira Knightly on the cover. The slim, little white book is on Issac Newton, written by the biographer of biographers, Peter Ackroyd. I find his writing elegant and engaging. This latest book of his is a gem about a brilliant genius. If only an apple would bop me on the head sometime!

Well I guess I and many others would now be regarded as experts in heavy petting and all matters in love and eros, since I love both, particularly books.
