What I'm Reading This Week (Jan.4,2009).

It's a new year of reading. I promised myself to read less and write more. We're not off to a good start. Much of my reading material comes from the excellent Westchester County library system.http://www.greenburghlibrary.org I order anything I want online, including the latest books. Once a week I pick them up. Sometimes a popular new best seller might takes weeks of waiting and sometimes not. Last week, to my horror, the librarian pointed to my waiting stack of a dozen books. I can speed read two books a week but twelve? They only hold them for a week, so I sheepishly took six and said I'd pick up the other six next week. This is not including my weekly bundle of magazines. The good news is the pile is smaller than usual. The Obama cover is the nicest I've seen. Look for him everywhere next month. We all know all cover girls and guys are Photoshopped to death, but they worked overtime on Oprah. Her cover shows the instant method to lose 100 pounds: Photoshop.

In the interest of digging deeper into my Finnish roots, I'm reading the brilliant Finnish writer Arto Paasilinna's The Howling Miller. Sarah Thornton's Seven Day's in the Art World is precisely that, from a erudite, well researched perspective.
This new book on Casanova by Ian Kelly is intriguing. Who knew Casanova was a devotee of the Kabbalah? I'm re-reading ( what a rare pleasure) every spiritual seekers must -read and read again story The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Fortunately, two of my Everest of books contain mostly photos and little text including Vanity Fair Portraits. It's a coffee table book which is the size and weight of a real coffee table. The content displays the iconic images from just about every fanous photographer of the past century. I couldn't resist having fun photographing a mirror image of Princess Di and her son. My favorite image though is from the stellar coffee table book on India by Eric Meola. I cropped this image of this stunning mandala, which I could easily see the folks at Hermes make a silk scarf from it. All kidding aside, this book makes my yen to visit India more than ever.

I love those silk scarves. I am bundled up in my running gear, gloves, heavy scarf, an old black cashmere underneath, and sneaks. Trying to sneak in a few short runs each day. All that holiday food. I discovered I have about 30 unread books at home, mostly romances, which I don't find that interesting anymore. Ah the couch calls. Must get to bed soon after the new DH tonight and B and S.
So much fatigue after the holidays.

Warm Greetings Dear Layla, first let me say I hope you are feeling better my dear. Not just the flu but also over your loss. My heart goes out to you and I hope your path is getting easier with each passing day.
Aha books, I love to read and always have. I am a book worm. I have stacks by my chair and our home library boosts over 2,000. I love knowing they are there. I always have plenty to choose from and often pick up an old friend and read it again.
