Love is...old friends.

Quote de jour

Valentine's Day shouldn't just be for lovers. With shops and advertising flogging everything from chocolate to diamonds, I'm reminded of the many other forms of love. With every passing year, I cherish my 'old' friends more. They know where the fault lines lie and where the bodies are buried. There is no need to edit while we communicate in a secret shorthand. We serve as memory keepers. Each remembering what the other has forgotten. The oldest friend, spanning almost five decades is Anne, pictured above. In each photo she is to the right of me. We've known each other since we were five-years-old (the bottom photo, goofing around in shower caps, to the top photo taken at a re-union last summer in Montreal.) Our parents remained life long close friends. They provided the glue during the gaps in our friendship. Our mothers, both widows now, remain close. This valentine is for you Anne, with love...

It's too easy for us to forget the many types of love. I've often wondered why, in the English and American languages, we have only one word (love) to cover so many meanings.

You got that right, old friends the bestest! Know that especially well being on the last day of a visit back home, romance is over-rated and fleeting!

Wow, so great that you have a lifelong friend. I have some life long cousins, but no friends since childhood.

You and Anne are so lucky to treasure what you two have together.

    Happy Valentine's Day Week.

So often nowadays, friends grow apart over the years or are seperated by circumstance while still young. It is, indeed, good to be able to embrace one's friends, old or new, with loving arms.

    wishing you laughter, my friend
