What I'm Reading This Week (April 13, 2009.)

Quote de jour
"A book is like a garden carried in the pocket."

I have the taste of chocolate and pastel jelly beans in my mouth as I write this. What's sweeter? The lingering taste of The White Tiger, the best book I've read in a while. Will this week's book's measure up? We'll see. We're off to a good start with Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. It's a current bestseller and winner of the 2009 Newbery Medal http://www.thegraveyardbook.com

It's an inky dark fantasy about a toddler whose parents were murdered in cold blood. This kid named Nobody grows up in a graveyard and raised by ghosts. I've always loved cemeteries but this book would have scared me silly at bedtime, as a kid. Is it my imagination, or are children's and YA books turning more macabre?
On the lighter side is Candace Bushnell's latest:One Fifth Avenue. It promises 'sex in the city' on Fifth Avenue about the intertwining lives of five women who live in a grand old building. I've barely cracked it open but me thinks her writing has improved. Either that or I've eaten too much Easter sugar.

Michelle Obama has taken over from her hubby as cover girl. She's everywhere!

There's more but no time to post.

Happy Easter, Layla. Love the photo of tulips and the quote, too. Thanks for the reading recommendations. I'm always looking for the next book!

I don't think I want to read about the toddler raised by ghosts, sounds strange.
I love the tulips, always they make me think of Spring and fresh new beginnings.

    Love the flowers.

If Bushnell's writing has improved, then it sounds very promising. I am very, very fussy regarding chick lit. Cannot stand Kinsella, for example. Maybe I am just too old or not rich enough to appreciate Kinsella's love of brands, but Bushnell offers insights into people and mores of the time.Been sick, so I miss a lot of my email.
