A Room With a View: Ducks and Ponds and Trees Oh My!

Quote de jour
"If you want one year of prosperity, plant corn.
If you want ten years of prosperity, plant trees.
If you want 100 years of prosperity, educate people."
                                                             ~Chinese proverb

This is the view from my bathroom. I've been waiting for weeks for the first hint of green. Today, on Arbor Day I was rewarded with a first greening. I know, it's barely visible but with all the rain we've had this week and projected temps in the 80s, I predict a full out green in a few days. I'm also thrilled but sad about some guests who just left.

Every spring and autumn, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard Duck pay us a visit. It's always just the two of them, no flock but I feel honored and thrilled anyway. They stay for about a week at our little pond with the tiny moss covered island containing one pine tree. The ducks are utterly devoted to one another, never letting the other out their sight for long. The velvety moss under the pine tree makes a soft and safe nest.

I like to imagine they are 'snowbirds' who live in Canada and winter in Florida.

As much I as I would have liked them to stay longer and perhaps raise some ducklings. I accept  that they have their own journey and I have mine. They may be gone, but the pine tree and all the other trees remain. In honor of Arbor Day, why not plant or at least hug a tree today?http://www.arborday.org

Lovely photos, Layla. We have a resident pair of geese who raise their goslings here every year. We look forward to their arrival every spring. It's greening here, too. Although we also were inundated with wet spring snow, as well! Happy Arbor Day!
