Westchester Wednesdays - Hair Salon with A Difference
Quote de jour
"I am not offended by all the dumb-blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb. I also know I'm not blonde."
~Dolly Parton
Most women like getting their hair done: a new cut, color and style while gabbing or flipping through magazines. I don't. Maybe it was too many bad haircuts as a kid. Or being stabbed by scissors, burned by curling rods, hair yanked at the mercy of someone standing over you while sitting with cold, wet hair. I've only come across on hair salon with sinks which don't require chiropractic visits afterward. To me, going to the salon is very personal experience, I don't want to see other people with their hair full of foil highlights resembling aliens or screaming into their cellphones to drown the sound of hairdryers or worse, blaring music.
In my search for the perfect hair dresser, I've experienced everything some the cheapest no frills salon, to the most expensive chi chi luxury. There were hairdresser/dictators (excuse me stylist) who thought they were rock stars, a wonderful artist who worked out of a loft in Toronto. I cried when he moved back to Shanghai. Then I moved to the U. S. to Westchester County and the search resumed all over again. Luckily, six years ago I stumbled upon a most unique salon close to home in Ardsley, N.Y. named after the owner Paul Anthony. It's the most laid back salon with no egos or snootiness. There is no hierarchal fee structure. Everyone charges the same, even the owner. He is one of the rare breed who understands, it's just hair. They're not saving the world. You could pay hundreds of dollars for a haircut, but you don't have to. It's only $50.00 for a cut and blow dry and it's no different than a $500.00 cut. New Yorkers are so used to being gouged by high prices, but only your pocketbook will know the difference.. Clients can switch between hairdressers without backstabbing or drama. My favorite hairdresser is Sandy, pictured below, but if I need to have something done on her day off, it's no problem seeing someone else. If I ever win the lottery however, I'd prefer having house calls in the privacy of my home. But until then, this is as good as it gets.
I've always been blessed with great hair. There's less of it now than in my youth, but that's the price of coloring it every shade of blonde, red and brunette. It has a natural wave but for a change Sandy blew it out straight recently. Her chair is next to the window which provides great natural light not that Sandy needs it. She could cut and style hair blindfolded.

I love looking like "Thing" from the Addam's family

If you live in the area, and even if you don't, this is one salon worth the trip.http://www.paulanthonysalon.net

Amazingly enough, we have actually been to Ardsley, a quiet little Westchester town, so unlike Rye Brook and M'ronek and New Rochelle, the towns I am more familiar with.
We stayed in Ardsley in 2006 when we were visiting NYC for a week.
I don't even go to hairdressers anymore, but I am happy you found one you liked.
Since I have naturally wavy hair, I learned the hard way to choose one who also had naturally wavy hair when I wanted a trim, otherwise, they would trim too much off.
Once I had a perm, oh that was me looking like a SHEEP for 6 months. Horrid. That was on Yonge Street.

Very nice Layla. And, how brave. I can so relate to shying away from hairdressers. I too think it has been too many bad experiences over the years, but looks like you have found a great place.
