Cat Saturday # 35 --The Oldest Cat Of the Week
Quote de jour
"He moved through the garden in glory, because he had very long claws at the end of his paws."
As far as my cats are concerned, it's summer. They only have two seasons: indoor or cold, and outdoor or warm. The first thing on Merlin's mind in the morning is getting outside to survey his domain. Breakfast can wait. Must be a guy thing.
All is well except for his vision. He's blind as bat and relies strictly on scent. I wish they made eyeglasses for cats or maybe contact lenses. It's not that farfetched. They have artificial limbs for pets. The inspection of the territory builds up an appetite for breakfast. Coco could care less about surveying anything larger than a Queen-sized bed.
Coco likes the fresh air, but always has an eye out for her arch nemesis, Domino.
"Who me? I wouldn't hurt a fly, " says Domino. Yeah, and bears don't poop in the woods. Domino was in a fight this week. His white nose is permanently scarred. The good news is he's learning to talk. He's gone from completely mute to a faint mew, and now a developed meow. I credit Merlin and his loud Siamese caterwauling for teaching him. Domino mostly says, "Where's dinner?"
Cats are living longer than ever. I am delighted to announce Cat Saturday's oldest Cat of the week. Momma Kitty is her name and she is twenty-one years old and still thinks she's a kitten! She lives with her mom, Carol in Tennessee and has lived quite the life including losing one eye. This savvy survivor is a pretty gray tabby who loves her catnip toys, napping and being queen of her domain.
According to Carol, "She lost her eye in the 90s. She was pregnant and a male cat tried to mess with her, she fought him and lost her eye, but kept her babies. I don't even notice it now. She has more energy than I do. If I leave for the store or even to go outside, she gets my slippers out and leaves them at the door. So funny. She talks to me. Meows all the time. I will ask her a question and she answers. Amazing for her age. I spend so much time with her, she is definitely spoiled. But her first couple of years were spent in the wild, she found us. She wandered to our house in the country with kittens, and I kept feeding her until she finally made our home hers. She is my baby now. She goes out and watches the birds. She will act like she's going to chase them, but about halfway through her stride, she stops and it's like she says, oh never mind! So funny to watch her."
It's kitten season. Shelters everywhere are overflowing with cats and kittens. One solution is providing foster care. This is an excellent way to enjoy having a pet without the long term committment. Foster cats who live in homes versus cages are more socialized and easier to adopt. Which brings us to our link of the week. Foster Cats works in the New York City area, and also do Siamese cat rescue. Sprinkles and his brothers are just a few of dozens of cats available for adoption.

Sprinkles and her housemates all lost their home when their owner died. The fellow had a penchant for magnificent blue-eyed angoras and white cats. These are all very cuddly cats who were horribly starved when they arrived and ate everything in such a panic, it was like feeding piranhas, but we're happy to say that they're much more relaxed about their food service now! They are nicknamed the dishwashers because their plates are so sparkly when they're through you'd wonder if they left the porcelain on them!
Until next time, have a purrfect day!

Merlin is looking good despite being blind. Coco is a doll and Momma Kitty is awesome.
21 is the oldest I personally have heard of a cat's life, have heard of a few in that range.
My Emma Peel made it to 20.
Domino is looking pretty spiffy.

I lived in a house with a cat named Smidgeon who lived for 22 years and I was a 'cat-sitter' and medical attendant my friend's beautiful black cat named Kitty (she needed daily doses of Tapizole for a thyroid condition and also needed subcutaneous fluid because her kidneys were going). Kitty finally passed at 24.
"Mama Kitty" is adorable.
