Westchester Wednesdays - Medicine Chest for the Soul

Quote de jour
"To those with ears to hear, libraries are really very noisy places. On their shelves we hear the captured voices of centuries-old conversations that makes up our civilization."

Since early childhood, I've enjoyed a deep love affair with libraries. To me they are magical and sacred repositories of knowledge, and best of all, free. For the past few years, I've paid a weekly visit to the Dobbs Ferry Library where not only do they know my name, but all my quirks, like being the magazine junkie. Yup, this is the place where I get most of items for my Sunday blog "What I'm Reading This Week". I do have a large library at home as well, but I estimate 80% of what I post is from the library. The Dobbs Ferry Library is under the umbrella of the Westchester County Library system which is easily one of the best in this country. I normally order most of my books online which is quicker and easier. The elegant, new Greenburgh Library is closer to home, but I prefer the smaller Dobbs Ferry Library.

As beautiful as the library is, I don't linger on the gorgeous terrace overlooking the Hudson River, or curl up on one of the cozy armchairs. I'm amazed that it's not more crowded.http://www.dobbsferrylibrary.org/

I confess to rarely visiting the stacks on the second floor, preferring to browse the latest books and magazines on the ground floor. There is the most lovely natural light in the stacks, and plenty of tables and chairs for reading, doing homework or research.

I love to chat  with the friendly (but camera shy) staff and librarians, and then make a quick getaway with my sack of treasures. This is my stack for this week. When ordering books online, there is a queue. Sometimes, they all come in at the same time, like the three books this week. Check back here on Sunday for info on them, and my speed reading adventures.

A gorgeous view. I would curl up and read and stare out the window for just about forever.

Our library is small, some of the other libraries have terrific views.

    Must order library books.
