Cat Saturday # 37 ---Tick Season

Quote de jour
"Is it yet another survival of jungle instinct, this hiding away from prying eyes at important times? Or merely a gesture of independence, a challenge to man and his stupid ways."

Welcome to Cat Saturday or Caturday for short. We celebrate all things feline here every Saturday. There is news, humor, educational info, and the latest adventures from my cats. All cats are special, but each week one cat is a little more special.  We call them CAT OF THE WEEK. I design a different poster every week according to the kittie's purrrsonality and share a little about them because as we all know every cat has a story to tell. If you have a special cat, let me know.

This beautiful emerald-eyed silver tabby is Alicia. She is about two years old and has the sweetest pink nose. Her human mom had no intention of adopting another kitty, but it's hard to walk out empty handed from a shelter.

This is exactly the kind of spot that ticks like to lurk. Merlin thought I couldn't see him, but I did and spotted a tiny deer tick on him. Merlin has a penchant for the weird and wacky. Of course he had to get a tick in the worst possible location; at the edge of his eye. There was no way I could get it out. Fortunately, the deer tick quickly gorged on blood and fell off leaving Merlin feeling...

Merlin is the Paul Newman of cats. For an old kitty, he's still handsome and a blue-eyed charmer except when it comes to...

his frenemy, the feral Domino. Who do you think is king of the jungle this week?

CAT ART OF THE WEEK
I like my cats big and small. This was taken in March at the Naples Zoo.

I came across this video of a typical tick removal session. My only comment is to place the tick into a covered container with rubbing alcohol to kill it.  They can survive even a flush down a sink or toilet. You want to remove the tick by its head with tweezers or a tick remover. Be sure to remove all of the body. Some say to pull it out straight, others says to twist it. In my experience, try one quick straight pull, but if it's lodged in deep, then twisting slowly is needed.   Place some antibiotic cream and afterwards and looks for any redness of swelling that might occur. Wash your hands afterward. If there is, plus a temperature, it's best to visit the vet and check for Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. The most active time for ticks in the north east is May through September. Be extra vigilant with checking your cat or dog as a part of normal grooming or petting. Please add any suggestions in the comment box.

Your cats are really nice. Please save them from ticks. It is better to use a tick twister too.
