Post Prom Pricks of the Heart

Quote de jour
(scroll down)
It's raining again. Pissing, pelting rain that sets the tone for today. Another milestone, bitter wrapped in sweet. Yup, it's prom season and my step-daughter got glammed up last night to do did the prom thing. I'm sure I will never know all the details apart from: dinner cruise in Manhattan, overnight stay at a hotel with BFFs and boys. I'm not sure I want to know all the details. What I do know, is that it's time to surrender to this rite of passage. These eight smart young men and women, laden with awards are all bound for college in the fall with new lives waiting to unfurl. I wish them roses without thorns, but life and truth will sometimes have thorns.

Roses without thorns. What a lovely thought, and a wonderful wish, but yeah, they will have to navigate the thorns by themsleves.

Our prom was at a nearby Marriott and only until midnight. Many girls went together in groups, only about one third went with a date.

And most of those with dates went as a friend, not as a boyfriend/girlfriend.

I would have been on the edge of my seat if my daughter had been on an overnight.

The prom here had so many problems in recent years, and one of the dances 3 years ago, the Luau, had 15 drunk girls sent to the hospital.....

Sad but true that we often learn best from the painful lessons rather than the sweet. "Everyone is entitled to a day of too much perfection" though (Bed of Roses). Sterlings, which are thornless, are my favorite rose and quite possibly my favorite flower. Yet, I do think we have to experience the thorns to appreciate the rose of life.

    wishing you laughter
