What I'm Reading This Week -- June 21, 2009
Quote de jour
"A home without books is like a body without a soul."
~Cicero
It's summer, although it doesn't feel it. It's the solstice and the longest day of the year. If only time was more elastic every day, but it isn't. It is with much chagrin dear reader to announce The Boomer Muse summer schedule. My own muse needs some care and feeding so, I will be posting every other day. This is subject to change and I'd appreciate some feedback. I'll probably post Mandala Mondays, Westchester Wednesdays and Cat Saturday every other week, and will try to continue to post What I'm Reading This Week weekly. Thanks for your support and understanding.
It was a big juicy week for magazines but only room for one book. I'm still wending my way through John Cheever short stories by the kilo. Yum yum. Note: The pink/green color theme is still hot as are: outdoor BBQ, dogs, cheap and cheerful, whole life make-overs, Kindles (over my dead body),Iran/Iraq, Michelle, Michelle, Michelle (enough already!) and Lady Gaga. When you read as many magazines as I do, I get a sense of which artist, writer or celebrity is about to make it big. It begins with a small mention in random spots, then an article or two, more bold name mentions and within months, whammo, a magazine cover like Lady Gaga on this month's Rolling Stone and suddenly, the person bobs to the surface of fame. It helps having over 60 millon views on Youtube. (scroll down to the end to see why she's everywhere.) The question is: how long can they stay in the limelight. Jessica Simpson looks good on the cover of Vanity Fair. It's every publicist's dream image make-over. But hey, I liked it when she was 'fat'.

I don't normally choose books from reading the obits, but this one was too good to pass up. Fleur Cowle died this past June 5th at aged 101. What an extraordinary life she led. This memoir from 1996, chronicles her many careers from journalist, writer, editor of Flair the avantgarde fashion magazine from the '50s, magic realist artist and friend and confidant of the rich and famous. Truly a who's who from Kings, Presidents, movie stars, Hemingway, Mother Theresa to the Queen mum. Not bad for someone who started life as Florence Freidman from Montclair New Jersey.

i adore Lady Gaga and so do many many adults...She said she changed from her native brunette to blonde because people were confusing her with Amy Weinhouse.
I am only posting about every other day now, so difficult a schedule. Whatever you have time for, go for it.
I did not know Fleur Cowle...

When what's fun becomes work, then it's time to take a break. Go for it!

I saw Lady Gaga on AI a few weeks ago for the first time. I loved her. I'd never heard of her before that.
I hope you are taking the time to refresh and just enjoy your life. Do what you need to do for yourself.
