What I'm Reading This Week --June 28, 2009.
Quote de jour
Summer is finally here and magazine colors reflect it. There is every shade of green plus red, white and blue for July the 4th celebrations. It's all about outdoor living and dining and value driven vacations. My favorite article of the bunch is from Icelandic Review about a woman from Iceland who opened up a B&B In India. The Secret Garden is exactly the kind of place I've been dreaming of visiting. http://www.secretgarden.in/
You don't need to be psychic to predict a slate of Michael Jackson covers in the weeks to come, and maybe a few for Farrah Fawcett as well. RIP the King of Pop http://www.michaeljackson.com/

It was slow week for reading. Slow for me is two books, a baker's dozen of magazines. I'm enjoying Consumed by Ben Barber especially the concept of branding and its impact on identity. It's a sad commentary on the world when an author's platform is more important than their book(except in this case). Mr. Barber is one of the smartest men I've had the good fortune to meet. He gets bonus points for having a good website as well. http://www.benjaminbarber.com/

I've heard good things about this slim novel Ms. Hempel's Chronicles by Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum and its lush poetic imagery. I love it when writers have website exclusively to promote one book. It boggles my mind that everyone doesn't do this. This one is cute.

Read well and prosper. Have a good week!

"The only thing better than good English writing is - I can't think of anything. You just don't pour it pureed over your potatoes. You savor it as if it were a find chardonnay. What on Earth does it matter if you stop and repeat a phrase, roll it around on your tongue, dart a few lines ahead and then suddenly come back and reread it? If the phrase is good enough, you are supposed to stop and rejoice in it." |

I chose English Lit as my major because
"I like English for the company she keeps."
I am down today because a good Gather friend killed herself last night.
