What I'm Reading This Week -- August 16, 2009
Quote de jour
A book burrows into your life in a very profound way because the experience of reading is not passive.
~Erica Jong
All the more reason to be choosy about which books to read. I feel no loyalty to finish a book that doesn't engage me. It could be on the first page or the hundreth page. At that sad juncture, I'll skim forward and if the disappointment continues, I'll head straight to the last page just to see how it ends.
The cover art on The New Yorker is apt. The city is and its environs reek of emptiness. I'm not ready for fall fashion. How can I be when I'm not ready for fall? With our bizarre monsoon season, our summer has just began.

Beware of choosing books for their cover art. I can't tell you how often I get suckered in by evocative images like the idyllic scene from
The Scenic Route by Binnie Kirshenbaum. The image reminds me of that classic '60s film: Two For the Road with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney wending their way through Europe on the ultimate road trip. The book isn't like that. I'm skimming alot but not giving up yet. There is some good writing to nosh on, but will it be enough to sustain me to the end?

I happened to catch a vintage clip of Julia Child preparing omelettes. This is hystrical. I'd forgotten how droll, sly and brilliant she was. I haven't seen the film Julie & Julia yet, but I'm salivating at the thought. In the meantime, this treat;Julia's Kitchen Wisdom by the kitchen queen herself will have satisfy me for now.

Julia was without equal, sine qua non, I enjoyed her very much. I wish the movie were without this Julie person, a person I think the NYT reviewer (or someone else) said some 21st century memoirists must make themselves appear interesting, even when they are not, like Julie Powell.
Loved the video.

I remember reading her blog and thinking, what a half-baked but good idea. I would have never thought in a million years that she could parlay a little blog into a book and film deal starring Meryl Streep no less, but go figure.
