What I'm Reading This Week-- Sept. 20, 2009.

Quote de jour
"The oldest books are new for those who haven't read them."

I nearly fainted at the library yesterday. After selecting a hernia -inducing pile of magazines, the smirking librarian carried out my on line ordered books. Nine. I may be a speed reader, but I'm no miracle worker, some books would have to go back. I felt like Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice. This is what I chose.

I'm loving this so far. Each chapter alternates between mother and daughter in this memoir by Sue Monk Kidd, best selling novelist of The Secret Life Of Bees and The Mermaid Chair and her daughter Ann Kidd Taylor. The daughter's voice is not as confident, but I give her credit. It can't be easy writing in her mother's powerful footsteps but she steps up and finds her own voice. www.suemonkkidd.com

More Marilyn. How could there be anything new, but there is with this new bio by J. Randy Taraborrelli with never before seen photos. Still sad, still iconic. Thirteen Reasons Why  by Jay Fisher is a current best selling novel about teen suicide for the YA market but transcends its genre with clever, original flair.

Magazine design is continuing in primary colors with pops of green and purple reflecting fashion as per usual. I predict more jewel toned covers in the coming months. Catch words: reinvent, best, best and best. Wall Street survives and thrives and what about Martha Stewart? I know she and everyone else is airbrushed to perfection, but all the photos of her are scary young. I'm guessing face lift, but maybe a painting in her attic a like Dorian Gray? I would like her just as much, if not more with a few wrinkles of wisdom.
