What I'm Reading This Week-- Sept. 27, 2009.
Quote de jour
"I'm sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne and the people who write about this and made people think about it. I'm rather proud of the fact that I know several astronauts who became astronauts through reading my books.”
Arthur C. Clarke
I read a ridiculous amount, so much so, I often hope the story doesn't engage me so I can fast forward to the next book. Every so often, a book stops me in my tracks and I willingly burrow body and soul into it. The Magicians a novel by Lev Grossman is that kind of book. http://www.levgrossman.com This recent best seller will appeal to older (late teens & up) Harry Potter fans who are ready to fall under the spell of life at college for magicians in upstate New York. The cover art doesn't do it justice. I'm a sucker for maps in novels and this one has a fun fantasy locale of the novel within a novel.

Julia Child must be smiling from heaven. Books, cookbooks and the recent film Julie & Julia have made the darling of French cooking a star all over again. This charmingly sly autobiography My Life in France is about her life in France and her marriage was written in 2006 and is a best seller three years later.

I've noticed this YA novel on the NY Times best seller list for ages and finally ordered it. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is novel about teen-age suicide written with a clever and fresh voice. Clever website with yay, another map.http://thirteenreasonswhy.com

The usual stack of magazines. Red, white and blue continue to figure prominently as color choices. Catch words? New Age of XYZ, more for less, best, change and ultimately it's all about branding. Now, if only there was an article to tell me why my perfectly crisp photographs are a blurry mess once posted, but there's no time...

excuse me... must run...I have a little light reading to do.

Sleep? What's that? Seriously, I dream more than I sleep.
