Westchester Wednesdays -- The Secret of Hank's Alley

Quote de jour
"Swirls of stained glass and china, glints of copper, brass and pewter, forests of carved wood and waterfalls of crystal and memories make antique shops wonderlands of treasure waiting to be found."

Every Wednesday, I feature my favorite people, places and things from my neck of the woods, Westchester County, N.Y. This week, we intertwine two in one. On a recent rain swept day, I decided to share one of my favorite finds with interior designer Jennifer Ellen Frank. http://www.anasainteriors.com  Jennifer, a fun and creative gal pal is always up for adventure. We drove up to Tarrytown, a charming town which slopes down a steep hill to the edge of the Hudson River in search of antiques and bargains. You find both at Hank's Alley and a whole lot more.

When I first moved to the area eight years ago another friend introduced me to Hank's. Many years and purchases later, the introductions to Hank's continue like a secret fraternity. It's no secret that antique dealers from as far away a New York City buy from Hank's Alley. His variety and prices can't be beat. The owner, seventy-six year old Hank Bucci likes it that way. He buys low and sells low to keep the merchandise flying off the floor. You never know what you'll find at Hank's. It's an Aladdin's cave of used and antique furniture, lamps, accessories and collectibles from kitschy to highbrow.

Hank and his wife Nancy moved in September to their new location, a two-story old fire house at 24 Kaldenburg Place in downtown Tarrytown. Hank is a character and if you're lucky, he'll be there when you visit. Jennifer lucked out (see photo below). Hank is a charming curmudgeon and everyone loves him. Don't be afraid to bargain with him. He is always strikes fair deal. He guarantees you won't find the same item cheaper anywhere.

Hanks is open Wednesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm. He doesn't have a website but you can call (914) 524-9895.

I'm thinking this is a place where lists don't work. And that when you see something you like, you grab it because it won't be there when you come back. All in all, my kind of place. Thanks for the tip.

I loved this story! I was in the other building when Hank and Nancy had the store there. They had everything and more! I also loved the fact that they purchased an old fire house. My husband and I are firefighters in upstate N.Y. Oh yeah, I'm Hank's sister in law. Nancy is my sister.
