Digging in the Past
Photo Quote de Jour

This moody old photo taken in Paris serves as my muse today. I like to dig in the past, but only if it can shine the light on the present. I love the architecture in Paris, and years ago found myself admiring the intricate gilt-covered ironwork of a balcony. The red back hoe popped out in unexpected irony. It was digging up the sidewalk, digging up the past to make way for something new. Someone I know is layered in toxic nostalgia, mired in the muddy past, preventing them from moving forward. I asked if they kept photos of their ex-husband around. "Yes, it was such an expensive portrait. I looked so beautiful then."
Old family photos and portraits are precious touchstones of our past but need to be stored, even buried at times until healing can take place. Reminders of an ex-husband on the wall of dining room can make anyone lose their appetite. Change can only happen in the present. When you're ready to let go of the past, it happens in moment, maybe the present moment. How about right now?

Burning works for some, but it is forever. I prefer storing toxic memories (ie. photos, memorabilia) out of sight until full recovery without being triggered.
