What I'm Reading This Week-- Dec.20, 2009 -- Stealing Books
Quote de jour
~Curse Against Book Stealers, Monastery of San Pedro, Barcelona Library.
" For him that stealeth a Book from this let it change into a serpent in his hand and rend him. Let him be struck with Palsy, and all his Members blasted. Let him languish in Pain crying aloud for Mercy and let there be no sur-cease to his Agony till he sink in Dissolution. Let Bookworms gnaw his Entrails in token of the Worm that dieth not, and when at last he goeth to his final Punishment, let the flames of Hell consume him for ever and aye."
Books are sacred to me, as are libraries, but not to everyone. Stealing books is on the rise and the most popular book to steal? Believe it or not, the Bible. Defacing library books is my pet peeve de jour. I take out a ridiculous amount of books and magazines every week. Nothing drives me more batty than looking forward to an article and find it's been ripped out. Or worse, seeing words underlined or notes jotted in the margins. Express yourself but not on public property.
I have cookies to bake and photos to take of last night's snow storm, but I'd rather curl up with these.

I'm still in my jammies (see the leopard print) and realize what got my knickers in knot today is seeing Obama's face on yet another cover. I began chronicling his excess periodical face time a year ago. Don't get me wrong, I'm a democrat, but aren't there other interesting people to feature on covers? I predict more patriotic red, white and blue on covers in the new year, but also yellow for its optimistic happy hue.

I'll be burning the midnight oil reading these books before the holidays. I don't know anyone who takes time to read as much as I do during the frenetic holiday season, but it's my calm in the storm. Shut the door, unplug and take a few minutes to read. You just might feel the spinning wheels slow down.

Thanks for this idea: reading as the calm eye in hurricane.

I, too, consider reading my calm in the storm. I don't know how people who don't read function.
Loved Temple Grandin's book - what a fascinating look at how animals think and perceive their world.
