What I'm Reading This Week-- Jan.3, 2010! -- New Year, New Books
Quote de jour
"Either write something worth reading, or do something worth writing about."
I'm paraphrasing Ben Franklin here but it sums up my goal this year. I am blessed to live in Westchester County which has probably the best library system in the country. I order whatever I like online and pick it up from any branch I like. New and popular best sellers may have a longer wait but not always. Normally,I have have anywhere from two to (horrors) eight books waiting for me but yesterday, there were none. It's always a feast or famine of books. I had to make do with some magazines, but what better opportunity than to go back to a book I'd liked and never finished. Library books are gold but one's own books are treasures. There are bookcases in literally every room in my house, and every so often I pick one at random. Today's choice is Away a novel by Amy Bloom. The stunning cover hides a lush commentary on love and loss. Good book are like old friends; you can pick up where you left off, even if you haven't seen them in ages. I hope to finish it time to read her new collection of short stories out any day now. http://www.amybloom.com

My tiny stack this week includes fascinating glimpses into crass popular culture (is there any hope for us?), the sublime quirkiness of Icelandic culture: fairies, gnomes and geothermal power, oh my! and Google. Don't they already own our minds? Do you remember a time before Google, before it became a verb? Not one day goes by that Google doesn't touch my life. Makes me want to dive into the blissfully hot Blue Lagoon in Iceland and not emerge until 201???

Excellent reading material. I have been too wiped out to do anything.
