Cat Saturday & Kitty Wisdom 101 - Beauty & the Beast

Quote de jour
"Cats don't bark and act brave when they see something small in fur or feathers, they kill it. Dogs tend to bravado. They're braggarts. In the great evolutionary drama the dog is Sergeant Bilko, the cat is Rambo.
~ James Gorman

We begin Cat Saturday this week with NEWS & MEWS.

I'm proud to announce The Boomer Muse has received another blogger award from
Crystal Clear Proofing via The Conscious Cat  Purrs of thanks!

The feline Rambo I've been blogging about for the past few Saturdays is back. After beating Domino up to a pulp, he came back for round two yesterday. Domino has mended nicely thanks to antibiotics, but my heart jammed into my throat when I heard the distinctive sounds of kitty warfare on the porch yesterday.
(Domino on the mend.)
I managed to get this shot before the fur could fly. Domino chased Rambo into submission. I happy to report no bloodshed, this time. Rambo is the black cat (seen here channeling Dirty Harry).

The coyotes are back. A woman was attacked this week by a coyote on a nearby walking trail.  It's especially worrisome for the outdoor cats. The wake-up call came a few months ago, when two coyotes loped a few feet past me in the garden. After that, I didn't dare leave Merlin and Coco outside unescorted, but what can I do about Domino who insists on being an outdoor cat?

Merlin, oblivious to the outdoor machinations, is a lover not a fighter. He is an aficionado of my art, and the art of sunning himself, while becoming a work of art himself.

Merlin and Domino like to hang out on the porch to shoot the breeze...

Cat are an eternal source of inspiration for artists and writers. I'm was thrilled to come across the work of Bernadette Kazmarski. She is fellow multi-hyphenated artist/writer/blogger/photographer, but she does something can't. While I know how to paint the human body, painting cats is so difficult, I've given up. I am in awe of her stunning portraits of cats. Bernadette's cat Stanley was her first inspiration (pictured in pastel on paper drawing below). Check out all her amazing work and tempting marketplace. The cats are under the link marked "The Creative Cat" http://www.bernadette-k.com/

Link of the week
Some animal shelters and rescue groups do little videos for individual cats up for adoption. I think they are better than just a photo, and I hope this trend catches on. This is a recent video of Sumana a Siamese from Cat Adoption team in Sherwood, Oregon. They have one of the best cat adoption websites I've seen too! http://wwwcatadoptionteam.org/

Until next time, love a cat or two or three...

I'm very sad about my (around) 17 outdoor feral/strays. It has been below zero here at night although I have given them shelter it must still be cold...they do huddle together though. My problem again is getting food for them. If I don't get help soon I don't know what I am ever going to do. I AM TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING!!! I am going to get each spayed and neutered throughout the spring and summer when I can come up with the money (if I can keep them alive until then!!!)
Plus I guess I am feeling bad in general because I have a cousin who is dying of lung cancer and he is only 44 and in the last stages! At this point also he will see no one but his sister and brother and Mom. I want to tell him goodbye so bad, but he refuses to talk to anyone!

Domino looks good - so glad to hear he's feeling better> Amber will be glad too, once I tell her (she's busy eating right now, and not even handsome Domino will distract her from that!). Sounds like he put Rambo in his place this time. He sure lives a dangerous life, and now he's got to worry about coyotes, too? Wish I had some advice for you, but short of Domino changing his mind about the joys of outdoor living, there's really nothing you can do.

I'm so glad you and Bernadette connected. She's so incredibly talented.

    Hi, Layla!

And here I thought coyotes were a western US phenom! Guess not. We have them here in L'Orange. They live down in a dry creek bed. When the creek dries up in the summer and the smaller wildlife dies out from lack of water and coyotes, the coyotes roam the neighborhoods. I lost a grey tabby to them years ago. I now have three cats and two stay inside. My black is indoor/outdoor because he goes beserk if I don't let him out. My only advice is: Carry a BIG stick!

Layla, forgot about this "other" piece of good advice. The best thing you can do, other than the big stick, is put your back against something solid. I learned this after being attacked by a male and female huskie dog in the park. The circled around me, the female in front of me and the male behind me. He hit me in the back of the legs causing me to fall. Had my back been to something, I could have kicked and grabbed and maybe gouged out their eyes.
As horrible as it sounds, I would have done it.
