Oh Canada Day, eh?

Photo quote de jour

It's Canada Day today and there is nothing more poignant than an expat celebrating in a foreign country. A very homesick Canadian friend living in the U.K. called me this morning to wish me a happy Canada Day. I’d forgotten and thought today was the last day of June, oops. I’m not especially patriotic or homesick, but the longer I live in the U.S. the more proud I am to be Canadian.

To celebrate, I sang the national anthem, well hummed (still don’t remember the lyrics) while I made this double-exposed image from photo taken last year in my garden. I wanted to capture the ephemeral nature of “home”. They say, home is where the heart or where you hang your hat, and I agree, home is wherever you feel comfortable in your skin. Our actual homes change every time we move. American move 11.7 times in their lifetime. We live in transitory and tumultuous times. Natural disasters displace millions every year. I’ve moved a whopping 30+ times in my life and have learned not to get too attached to my physical home. For the record, I’ve lived the longest (8 years) at my current home and boy, am I itching to move (just kidding). I will inevitably move again. Where to? Where I’m most comfortable: probably Canada and since I’m an E.U. citizen, maybe France.

Today, I feel just a little bit more Canadian and that’s okay, eh? Happy Canada Day!
