Don't Push The River

In my quest to squeeze out every last drop of summer, hubby and I packed our bikes, a picnic lunch and drove to a new trail in Croton-on-Hudson yesterday.
We got lost, tempers flared in the blistering heat and I soon realized, sweaty and panting that I was not as fit as hubby. Professional athletes push through walls of discomfort and regular folks do too, but often with tragic results. My husband is a serious mountain biker. I am not. In the past, I might have soldiered on, but instead I listened to my body and its pounding heart. Instead of pushing the river, I found a shady spot under a tree to lie under, elevated my legs to give my heart a rest, sipped water and ended the day with an ice cream cone. We didn’t complete the trail as planned, but we didn’t die trying or murder each other, so I’d call it a successful day.
Today is even hotter and we have another adventure planned but bikes not included.

Yes, cycling is very serious, as you and I have found out. I still have scrapes. Well, it was less than a week ago. Have not been back yet, but trying to exercise indoors.
For people trying to get in shape, it is a slow process with increments of speed or intensity or distance about 10 percent at a time, safely.
