Opposites Attract

Photo quote de jour

Last week I visited the world headquarters for Pepsico in Purchase N.Y. I had no corporate agenda; I was there for the art. The former CEO Donald M. Kendall amassed a museum quality collection of 20th century sculpture from Henry Moore to Alexander Calder and placed them in a manicured 168-acre park. It’s almost beautiful enough to coax me to work for corporate America (just kidding.) I envy the workers who get to picnic on the grounds at lunch, not that I saw anyone. After passing through the security gate and driving down an endless drive to an enormous but largely empty parking lot, the only person we saw were two old guys at an information booth who handed us maps. Granted, it was a hot day but as soon as we began out tour on the hyper-manicured path, I felt as if I was being spied on like in the 60’s cult TV show “The Prisoner” or maybe the Stepford Wives. Everything was too perfect. Too quiet. Too many rules. It’s not the kind of place you can pee in the bushes. The art was fabulous and the price was right. Free.

The self-portrait had to be with a Henry Moore since I adore him and we share the same birthday. I choose that quote because of its deeper meaning. Everything in life has its opposite and most of us will experience both. It’s only by knowing hunger that we can appreciate a good meal. The yin yang duality adds the richness to life. Opposites attract. We will have illness and health. We will have a job and be unemployed or retired. We will have one career or then another. We will be in a relationship and single, married or divorced. We will have money or be broke or in debt. Nothing stays the same.

Enjoy it all. Happy Friday!
