Cat Saturday - Double Your Pleasure

Photo de jour (Two for the price of one)

Does Domino have the fattest cheeks you've ever seen?

News & Mews
Domino is getting over an eye infection and could probably use some dental care. I'm keeping the front door ajar as much as possible to lure him indoors with the plan of trapping him eventually. This week's progress:While upstairs, I heard him crying louder than usual and go to the landing. There he was half way up the stairs for the first time! He and Merlin have been hanging out in the usual spots but for the first time, inside the foyer.  Merlin is vocalizing with operatic lung power making for many sleepless nights. He's physically spry for almost 16 but like old humans, the personality changes can be unsettling. It's heartbreaking watching elderly cats gradually deteriorate. Coco wants nothing to do with me and changed allegiance solely to my husband. It reminds be of that wonderful film about  Alzheimers called Away from Her.

One of my birthday presents was this book of stunning cat photos.
I have a new theory about why Merlin is constantly sniffing. He may be compensating for his other diminishing senses like sight.

LInk of the Week
The film Revenge of Kitty Galore is out. Here's a clip. Silly fun and isn't that what summer is all about?Gotta run, birthday  celebrations continue in Jersey and no, not with Snooki.

Oh Domino's fat cheeks are so cute. Coco switching to your husband. Cats. Finicky. Our Mao loved our daughter solely, now has adopted my husband. Cheddar remains my first and foremost.
When Emma was 16, she was beginning to get old. She died at 20, truly old.

Sure looks like Domino could use some dental work in that yawn photo - that's some major tartar build up on those incisors!

My heart goes out to you as you watch Merlin and Coco decline - it's hard to adjust to that.

The book looks wonderful - I may have to add that to my wishlist. Enjoy the rest of your birthday celebrations!

It leads me to believe he's older than originally thought, maybe six + years.

Layla, you have my empathy as to Merlin's getting older. My dog Sylvie, will be 16 on August 15 and I understand the problems you have.

Sylvie doesn't see well and has black skin disease (can't be cured), so she has lost most of the hair on her back, hind legs and tail. Also, she is totally deaf, and I have to clap my hands to get her attention. To further matters, she has stopped eating, although she'll take anything you give her from the table. I don't do this, but the friend I live with does. Sylvie will eat whatever you give her -- even a piece of cantaloupe, but will walk away from anything I put in her food dish. I've had to resort to sitting her on the kitchen counter and force feeding her. I have to shove the first three bites into her mouth. After that, she'll take it from me herself.

What gets me the most is at night. She's always slept on my bed. Now, she runs back and forth over my feet to wake me up and wants to go out to do her business. I'll let her out the door, and she'll just stand on the patio and stare at the grass, then want back in the house. This happens about 2 hours apart all night long, sometimes more. I'm contemplating euthanasia, which I don't want to do. I've had to do this with two other dogs, but I waited until their back legs gave out and they couldn't walk. It's a hard thing to do, but sometimes you have to do it.

I know what you're going through with Merlin, and you have my sympathy. It is really sad to watch them deteriorate.

Poor Sylvie! Tinch, my heart goes out to you. It's the hardest thing to know when is the right time to put down a pet but trust your heart. A shaman told me recently to ask the pet, when, where and how they want to go.

One of my cats, Cinders, 16, like Merlin is changing. She is slowly losing weight but healthy and still has all her teeth. Her skin sags.
    Love Domino's cheeks!

"All cats should be put on a pedestal." Loved that. Your cat Saturdays are great fun. The pics and quotes are wonderful. Sorry to hear about Merlin and Coco's declining health. Just last weekend a good friend's dear cat companion expired naturally at the grand old age of 20+. She went peacefully, as we all would like to go.

You are so right, to go peacefully in old age. It's easy to come up with aphorisms when my cats agree to pose like that.

He is quite the character for a feral cat. I plan to give him a starring role in Kitty Wisdom 101.
