What I'm Reading This Week - August 15, 2010

Quote de jour

"If you believe everything you read, you better not read."
~Japanese proverb
This is this week's magazine selection. Most disturbing cover: Time Magazine's Afghani woman with her nose chopped off. It makes the "drop ten pounds fast and simplify summer of other magazines disturbing on another level.

After last week's literary journey into all things yoga, I felt the need for more levity. I hit the jackpot with the current #1 NY Times best seller Sh*t My Father Says by Justin Halpern. The funny writer with a funnier father jotted down his dad's opinions and bingo, a million Twitter fans later arrives this pint-sized powerhouse book of laughs. If you need a laugh or ten, read it. I'm serious about reading and food, so I was thrilled to get my grubby hands on Anthony Bourdain's latest yesterday. If you have any foodie genes and haven't read his first book Kitchen Confidential, what rock have you been living under? Read it post haste, then dig
into Medium Raw. He's the king of funny, raw, irreverent food and travel writing, and I'd share a cerveza with him any day. His TV show, No Reservations is in my top five faves. Go Tony! AnthonyBourdain

When I think of Somerset Maugham, I think of travel as well, but genteel, white-gloved service like at Raffles in Singapore or lounging at his villa in the South of France in the 20's. I've always loved his short stories and knew he lived a glamorous globe-trotting life, but now this riveting bio The Secret Lives of Somerset Maugham by Selina Hastings selinahastings.com sheds new light, and I hope a new generation of readers discovers his talents. Must run, I have some reading to do....

Wow, you have been doing a lot of reading. I am lucky to get through a book a week. I guess I spend too much time on my blog. Those do look like great books and will start saving up now to get them.
I am working on a good picture of Splitters. I have a couple of older ones that I will email to you. She is very excited about her new long distance romance. She is a little thin right now, which we don't know why, so it is hard to get a really good picture.
    Have a great week.

I read about the Maugham book in the NYT recently. Most interesting. And Forster had quite a secret life, too, I believe.
