What I'm Reading This Week - September 5, 2010

The blog will be dark on Monday for the holiday and I'll be back on Tuesday. Happy Labor Day!

Quote de jour
"Never judge a book by its movie."
~ J. W. Eagan

Normally, I feel conflicted when a favorite book is being made into a film, but not this time. This week I was thrilled to learn that the film version of last Sunday's book pick, the brilliant novel One Day by David Nicholls is currently in production starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. God, I hope they don't bugger it up. The book is so delicious you could eat it with a spoon. I loved it so much, the moment I turned the last page on Friday, I found the author's website David Nicholls and promptly sent him an ass-kissing email.

It was never my intention to do proper book reviews here. I simply wanted to keep a visual record of my reading, but it appears literary publicists have other ideas. Two publicists are sending me review copies of their client's books, so let's see. Meanwhile it was slow reading week of "catch up" from last week: A mere molehill of magazines...

and I'd heard good things about the new compilation of Shirley Jackson Novels and Stories. Famous for the Gothic novel (made into a film) The Haunting of Hill House, I've never actually read her work, and look forward to diving into her macabre world. The flap copy by none other than Joyce Carol Oates sums it up enticingly.

Yes, neer judge a movie by the book.

Ah! Shirley Jackson. I read "The Lottery" in Westmount High as part of "North American Literature.

Remarkable story I often quote to people.

Apparently, in raising her children, she got mixed votes. Difficult marriage, over devotion to writing.
