Synchronicity and the Mystery Man
Quote de jour
~Carl Jung
Often when I'm editing photos, I zoom in and notice something I didn't when the shutter clicked. There might be a hidden bug in a flower or a pedestrian unwittingly in edge of a shot. Then, there is synchronicity. On a recent visit to Governors Island, the lovely scenery provided many photo ops. I like taking candid shots of people and didn't think anything unusual about this shot taken on the ferry.

The only person aware of the camera was the guy in the sunglasses, but he's not the mystery man. We may be looking at the same things...

but we experience the same things differently. Some of the people on the ferry were looking at an art installation called "At the Same Moment". I didn't know it was an art installation and tried to make sense of the words. Some probably didn't even notice and looked towards our destination. Did they notice the smoke from the Staten Island ferry, the waves or the Statue of Liberty? What we notice determines what we experience.

The Statue of Liberty loomed in many of my shots.

There were many pedestrians and cyclists, and just as I was about to get a close up of Lady Liberty...when
this happens. At this point I didn't recognize the guy from the ferry. But later in the day, wait...is it him again?

This was getting weird. I was so focused on getting a shot of the dancer sculpture I didn't notice him, the mystery man.
Apparently he hadn't noticed me either until...

he tried moving away so I could get a clear shot. I motioned for him to get back into frame. I don't think he understood what I was trying to do and perhaps didn't speak much English. I figured there must have been a reason for my "accidental"shots of him all day. Maybe we'll never know but he obliged me with this...

Maybe two strangers smiling and connecting over art was the reason, and that's reason enough for me. What connection might you have missed by not noticing? No matter, start now and enjoy your next synchronicity.
Synchronicity…means a ‘meaningful coincidence’ of outer and innerevents that are not themselves causally connected. The emphasis lies onthe word ‘meaningful’.

wonderful synchronicity; and for a huge metropolis like New York. I have had them but have not noticed any recently. Maybe I need to open my eyes and really look.

I loved this photo story, Layla..Do you remember the book; "The Celestine Prophecy" and saying that if we keep bumping into a "stranger" they're messengers for us in some way. I think you ran into a guardian angel who was just checking up on you. Btw, love Jung and the quote!

The shot that the mystery man posted for you was great. Did you take the trouble to get his name and where he came from?

Jimmy, no it didn't feel right. I thanked him and we parted.

Beautiful! If only he knew! Serendipity.

It's wonderful to connect with another person at any level. I'll bet you helped put a happy smile on that "stranger's" face.

It was a nice bonus to get that spontaneous smile. I know what it feels like to be a solitary tourist.
