Cat Saturday- Sweet 16 Birthday!

Photo quote de jour ( a special double birthday version)

NEWS & MEWS

It's Merlin's sweet 16 birthday today, but it's bittersweet. Twenty years ago, my first Siamese died a few weeks shy of her 16th birthday, and a two weeks ago, Merlin's sibling Coco died. I'd really had hoped she would make it to her sweet 16, but Coco had a rendezvous on the Rainbow Bridge. So, it's just the boys left, Merlin and feral Domino. Merlin is understandably melancholy and Domino has practically been doing cartwheels and playing the clown to cheer up his grieving pal. Hubby joked about them being gay. This is Domino's birthday card to Merlin (if he had computer skills).

Anyway, how could Domino be gay if he has a long distance girlfriend named Splitters? Her mom, Marg sent me this photo and a note trying to coax Domino indoors this winter.

This is my first experience with cats grieving cats. Like human grieving, there are stages and it can be a bumpy ride. Merlin is at the anger stage and none too happy with me. He won't snuggle in my arms or sleep near me. We're doing everything possible to amuse him while respecting his process. Today he's king for the day and regal as ever every day. This is one of his "official " birthday portraits. While he's always been a handsome boy and sexy beast, but now he exudes dignity and a timeless wisdom.

The only thing to give the birthday boy pleasure (besides cuddles and ear rubs) is this drool-worthy good stuff!

A very happy birthday to Merlin and to Coco at the Bridge, who no doubt is celebrating too.

We also have gone yellow for LIVESTRONG day and we're sending purrs, healing Light and universal Blessings to All Beings who have been impacted by this disease.

A huge Happy Birthday to you Merlin and to Angel Coco too. We hope you have a terrific day Merlin and many more to come. We know that your humans will give you lots of extra treats.
Dom, we also hope you liked Splitters picture. See how much she is enjoying that comfy chair. You could be doing the same thing. Dom, you just have to move into the house. Besides, Merlin needs some company.
Take care and have a wonderful day all of you.

    Happy Birthday, Merlin.

There's almost nothing sadder than a grieving cat - it's such a helpless feeling to watch them go through their own process, and all we can really do for them is love them and hold the space for them. Come to think of it, that's really all we can do for a human who is grieving, too.

Beautifully said, Ingrid. He was indulged all day; enjoying the outdoors walking and napping in the sunshine.

Do you give them Gerber's Baby Food? A little on the fingers?

    Beef or Turkey. . . yum. .

I tried the baby food before Coco died but haven't given Merlin any. There's still an unopened jar in the fridge so maybe he'll eat it.
