Cats, Flowers & Pumpkins Oh My!

Photo quote de jour

This is a well taken care of feral ( part of a TNR colony) on a street I frequently walk by. Today is National Feral Cat Day and my link of the week (scroll down to end) is Alley Cat Allies who have must read info on ferals and how to help them.

Oh my dog... where did the day, week, month go? Is that the sound of the hamster wheel?

News & mews

Merlin had a melancholy week. Cats don't cry but there was tear in his eye in this shot. Just when I thought he was out of the grieving woods, pow, sadness. He knows Coco is dead, but with the colder weather he's missing his snuggle buddy. My heart broke when I saw him sitting yesterday, stoic as an old soldier on Coco's sofa in my dressing room. It was her special spot and he never bothered her there. Clearly, he needs a companion but who and when remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Domino has a warmer blanket but not the electric one just yet. He's as untrusting as ever. Maybe the icy winter ahead will melt his fear. He has so many fans rooting for him to come inside this winter. GO Domino!

Thanks for all the feedback yesterday. This is the favorite #8 which will be available from cards to prints at my RedBubble Gallery. I will be adding more cat related images with proceeds going to cat rescue organizations.

If Domino still can't trust enough to come inside, what about an insulated "house" for him? You can make one with two Rubbermaid containers -- one large one and one smaller to fit inside, with hard foam insulation in between and straw in the bottom to keep him warm. (A hole cut out at the end, of course, so he can go in!) Of course, there are *nice* feral kitty house, very attractive, that you can buy, but the home made one is inexpensive and easy to do. Just a thought, not quite sure what your set-up is.

I'm wondering what to do about my neighbour's cat. He's supposed to live in the townhouse adjacent to mine, but as far as I can tell, he's not been inside since last winter. She bought a hyper dog then and I don't think Nico (cat) wants to be around him. I've been feeding him and recently put out a little round "house" on my step for him, to give him shelter from the rain and wind. He can't come inside; my Nicki fights with him when my cats are out in their enclosed back space. And I can't take on a fourth cat for other reasons also. I'd love to make a warm shelter for him, but my step is so small, there's not room for a Rubbermaid container and food/water. He's declawed too, poor boy. I don't understand why she doesn't just bring him into her house. Well, she doesn't care enough, that's patently obvious.

Sorry for rambling on about him. Nothing gets me upset faster than neglect, or the stupidity and ignorance of humans who don't alter their pets and thus contribute to overpopulation and euthanasia.

With regard to Merlin: My Annie didn't even notice when Chumley died, except she clearly knew *I* was devastated for a long time. But she could have settled into only-cat status without problem. I hope the right companion for Merlin comes along in due course.

Domino, does have a nice winter nest with an electric heating pad, but nothing beats a real home. Re: Nico, someone needs to take responsibilty. Have you spoken to her? Maybe she wouldn't care if he were adopted by someone else.In the meantime try to make the best cozy nest possible.

The moody photo of Merlin against a royal purple background is heartbreakingly beautiful. I would want to hug him... but he seems to demand me to respect him and keep my distance. (maybe afraid the closeness would bring more tears)

Pat, thanks, he does have a regal bearing but he's so mushy huggy.

Poor Merlin, it will take time. Number 8 really is great. Domino's blue eyes are a mystery; so rare when not in Siamese.

Kathryn, thanks. I suspect Domino has some Siamese in him since he's not long-haired like a Persian.

I'm sorry to hear Merlin is still grieving - but it's probably not surprising. Just like with humans, feline grief comes in waves. It feels to me that maybe he doesn't need a companion so much right now as he just needs to be with his memories of Coco. Maybe taking over spots that she used to be in is a way for him to feel connected to her.

Fuzzy Tales, I agree with Layla - maybe you could talk to your neighbor to see if she'd be open to having someone else adopt the cat? And since you can't take him, maybe a local rescue group would consider taking him in and finding him a new home?

      Thanks, Ingrid. That makes sense.
