What I'm Reading This Week- Jan. 2, 2011- Top 10 of 2010
Quote de jour
"In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you."
~Mortimer Jerome Adler

It's no easy feat editing the list of the two hundred+ books I've read in the past year to the top ten. My choices are a combination of good writing with good storytelling and certain je ne sais quoi. Something in each of these books seeped into my brain and stayed there. In no particular order, my top ten of 2010 are:
1) The Help by Kathryn Stockett (novel)
2) At Home by Bill Bryson (nonfiction)
3) Shirley Jackson's compilation of novels and stories (fiction)
4) Role Model by John Waters (memoir)
5) The Great Oom by Robert Love (biography)
6) Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain (memoir)
7) Away by Amy Bloom (novel)
8) The Shallows: What The Internet is Doing To Our Brains by Nicholas Carr (nonfiction)
9) Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man by Bill Clegg (memoir)
10)One Day by David Nicholls (novel)
I have a sneaking suspicion circumstances will not allow as ambitious a reading schedule in 2011. This means making more diligent choices. Wish me luck and see you next week.

I laughed out loud when I saw the above picture. I'm afraid that's what books do to me these days.

I will give two responses: pre and post internet.
pre: I love the selections of The Help I've read in various writing courses. Bryson is always a gem, and so is Shirley Jackson, despite her bipolar illness.I would love to read Waters and Clegg and The Shallows.
Now: post internet.

I resisted looking at today's post until now, because I knew it would make my TBR list grow even longer. I wasn't wrong - and I'm glad for it!
