What I'm Reading This Week --Jan 9, 2011
Photo quote de jour
This is our first "Room with a view" of 2011. It's Odin's first winter and he loves the snow. He plans on reading all the Russian classics this winter. My reading list is less ambitious.
When favorite books get made into films, I expect the worst. Like millions of other fans of Eat Pray Love I wanted to enjoy the film, but last night I groaned and fastforwarded through the disappointing film version.
A smaller than usual selection of magazines. Best cover? Cyber freaky portrait of Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. I still find it hard to believe his parents live five minutes away.
We're off to a roaring good start. My first new book of 2011 is (and dare I say it?) by a favorite new writer, a slim delicious157 page novel Fame by a young Austrian Daniel Kehlmann who is all the rage in Europe.
This saucy satire skewers fame and celebrity.(translated from German). You can read a excerpt at the writer's website danielkhelmann.com
I don't normally go for the schmaltzy novels masquerading as life lessons in parables, but I did. I breezed through the syrupy Seventeen Minute Miracle by huge best selling Mormon writer Jason F. Wright this morning. A lovely publicist overnighted me a copy, and the writer won't need my two cents to make this into another best seller. Jasonfwright.com Any book that espouses random acts of kindness is okay by me.
Former artist/art critic turner novelist and MFA professor Andrew Winer's recent novel (his second) The Marriage Artist is about love, art and death. One look at his website and it's clear there are more layers to discover than meet the eye.AndrewWiner.com

I love this photo; I love the stark beauty and subtle life forms in winter's bleak magic.
And Odi-baby looks entranced. You have a houseful or purrs!
I had never heard of Jason Wright, so I looked him up. Wow. He wrote in his blog that Joseph Smith is not the founder of the LDS Church; Christ is and Smith 'restored' it to what it was supposed to be.
This of course is in reaction to the mistaken belief that Mormons are not Christians.
And other spun myths.
Create a lie and tell it often enough and people will believe it. The late President of the Mormon Church Hinckley had said:
'There is absolute truth and then there is truth that we want people to hear. We don't believe in absolute truth. We will tell people the truth we want to hear.' (Paraphrased).
Hinckley also said that the women, gays and intellectuals are the enemies of the Mormon church.
I like random acts of kindness, too, but Mormons are....

The Russian classics, eh! Couldn't you stat him out with something a bit more cheerful? Then again, imagine how glorious the first days of spring will seem after a winter of 'Notes From The Underground'.

Yes, is it too early to count the days?

What a gorgeous shot out your window! Perfect in black in white. Makes me want to settle in with a good book, some hot cocoa and my snuggly Tigger.
