Cat Saturday- Good News & Bad Mews
Photo quote de jour

What a week! Some people think cats just lie around all day, but that's not true. Odin convinced Gris Gris to try snow bathing. It didn't going over very well, but it satisfied his curiousity. You're either a snow cat or not.
Odin enjoyed an especially exciting week trail blazing in the snow every day. He's progressing with leash training. Will running in a park be next?

Meanwhile indoors, Merlin and Gris Gris often nap this arrangment.
Do you agree that cats are either under cover cats or top of the bed cats or? Merlin and Odin are undercover cats and Gris Gris needs to where he can get a fast getaway. Considering he spent ten+years living in a basement as a mouser, he's come along way in less than three months. He's still whip thin and tightly coiled as a steel spring, but his coat is getting shinier and he's his self-esteem grows with every passing day and every compliment. Cats like kids thrive on encouragement and praise. I think he's finally beginning to believe that he's handsome, good and loved. I hope he'll be the poster boy for adopting senior cats.
This week all three had their nails trimmed. A first for Gris Gris since he arrived here and it was Odin's very first time. With calm talking before and during of why and what was happening, they seemed to understand and cooperated with little struggle. The little angels turned into devils another day. Cats are natual hunters and if they have to choose between toys and something live, what do you think they'd choose?

Yup, it happened. Odin caught his first live mouse, small one but he was beyond ecstatic. He raced up and down the stairs carrying his prize. The only thing I hate about cats is their torture/play instinct. We saved the mouse by tossing him outside. Odin was not amused. The next day, Gris Gris caught his first mouse (maybe the same one?). He dropped it proudly (still alive but playing dead) and before you could say Mickey, Odin snatched it and this time, he wouldn't let go, growling if I got near. It wasn' t a pretty spectacle. Score:Odin 1. Mouse 0.
Other bloody news: Feral porch boy Domino endured another attack dripping blood on the coldest night. He hid under the porch avoiding his heated nest. I left antibiotic-laced food and expected a frozen corpse in the morning. After two days he returned to his nest and we fed him in bed until he bounced back from his 9th life. I have no doubt his bulk helped him survive. He's out and about, but fed up with winter as much as I am. And to think he's one of the lucky ferals.
Winter weary Domino in his lair.
Some cats have jobs, like Mayor of a small town. See for yourself. Guaranteed to warm the coldest heat.

The photos of Odin in the snow are just wonderful! What a big week for him: more snow, and his first mouse.

A big week for him, and now 8 months old!

Poor Dom. Sure glad to hear that he is OK. Darn those cats that beating him up. Not nice. He sure does have it better than most feral kitties. He has a great home even if it is a little cool at times.
That Odin is a riot out playing in the snow. Good for him to catch the mouse. Great pictures. Have a super Saturday.

Thanks and will do. Dom defends his turf with such bravery.

Oh Domino, I hope he stays okay. Gosh, I worry about that boy.
Odin is a great mouser. Our two boys just watch the mouse under the stove and sometimes terrify it so that it squeaks.
My Siamese were the only cats who like being under covers. The others were just undercover cats.
Ched tucks in lose to me and Mao sleeps on my knees.
Sorels came and I can't stop wearing them.
Gris Gris is a handsome boy. And Merlin and Odin and Dom Dom.
Now back to sleep with Ched and Mao.

Wonderful blog Layla! When my cat Sam was a young whippersnapper like Odin, he'd play like that in the snow - these days at the ripe old age of 11 he still likes a quick hike out there then he finds me and asks for me to pick him up and carry him BACK inside! As for being an "undercover" cat - sometimes he likes to have a blanket over him when he's napping.

Thanks, so much and welcome!

Odin definitely has that regal look. No self-confidence lacking there.

Yes, at this point the cocky confidence of a teenager.

Hi Layla, lovely blog and sweet cats. On the undercovers/over covers controversy: Well, my cats can't seem to decide, they are a little unpredictable. I'm partial to the under-the-covers cat snuggle though.

Undercover cats are the ulimate snugglers.

I feel so bad for Domino. I wish he'd agree to be an indoor cat. I'm thankful he has you to love him even if he won't let you be close to him. Odin is fun. I love his blazing trails thru the snow. Any big secrets (or small ones) on how to train on a leash. We've been talking about that but I've never had good experiences doing this with a cat.
I love your Saturday blog the best because of the cats.

Faith, thanks for your concern about Domino. He's ok now. You'll love the pic of him I'm posting tomorrow. Re: leash training. Earlier is better. Some cats don't take to it. Merlin and Coco didn't. Odin associates getting into his harness with outdoor adventure and knows if he behaves he'll have more fun. Have you tried the clicker technique?
