Cat Saturday: Scaling New Heights
Photo quote de jour

NEWS & MEWS
The slinky elusive Gris Gris may never be a lap cat, but he's surprisingly responsive. He comes when called and is thrilled with his supervised outdoor time( here on the porch showing off his healthy new coat).

Now that the snow is melting, Merlin enjoys supervised sunbathing. His tree climbing days are long over, but his pal Gris Gris discovered new heights.

Before you get alarmed, please note it looks more dramatic than it is. This is the laundry room addition and the edge is only three feet from the ground. Ditto with this shot. He's two feet from the ground and perfectly safe.
When he first came to live with us just over four months ago, he hated the camera and I could not get a decent shot of him. While no diva, he's used to it and he indulges me. Part of it is due to his newly acquired confidence. He's no longer afraid to look me in the eye and lately has snuggled ever closer in bed. Merlin, my old snuggle bunny divides his time at night between me and his shadowy friend. I take what I get. After all, Merlin rules the roost. Odin competes by sneaking in a slobbery undercover purr fest at some point during the night.

All of us are anxious for winter to leave.

Odin discovered his first flowers and did more trampling than tiptoeing.

He moved quickly from the ground to a higher place to exclaim...

Who knew last year's mega storm which toppled trees would provide a purrfect jungle gym for Odin? He also mastered jumping on top of the fridge this week but that was a piece of cake after this parcour training. He's a muscular ten pounds and g r o w i n g.
Update: Midget the ten week-old blind kitten I posted a pic of last Saturday was transported from the vet yesterday to the private shelter Cat Assistance NY. They did not operate and while the prognosis isn't good for his vision, miracles have been known to happen. He's healthy and sweet and up for adoption/foster/sponsorship. I'm doing the admin for the Cat Assistance NY Facebook page. Hope you "Like" us.

Odin looks like he's quite possibly the happiest kitten on the planet. What a joyful little guy!
I can't believe how much snow you still have. Domino has the right idea.

Ingrid, he is ecstatic now that the weather is warming. We had a long walk today. The exercise is good for both of us!

Dearest Layla,
You've converted the "unconvertable" if there is such a word. I used to delete your cat Saturdays - i'm not a cat person, in fact i'm alergic! However week by week, a picture here, a caption there, I've begun to look forward to your cat Saturday posts over my morning coffee.
Having known Merlin since what 1997? I know he is a very special one. And now watching Odin and Gris Gris and the transition of energy they have brought is so good to see.
I want you to know that what you do does make a difference - ONE person at a time. Because of you - I've put the call out to see if fostering a cat here in England is something I might be able to do to "get my toe" wet as it were. Maybe I can manage the allergies LOL - Lets see...
In the meantime - this is a round of applause to you for your silent work that you do to raise the profile of cats, the joy, the need, the awareness. I know this momentum began back in Toronto when you founded the Annex Cat Rescue - to which I hope people continue to give the nod of tribute that you deserve. A new team may be watching over it but without you - there would be nothing to watch. Your legacy remains...
And now I know you are supporting the Cat Assistance NY group and I wish it and you and the team much success!
You and all the volunteers and of course the needy pets deserve it so.
With thanks and love,
Have a Prrrrfect Saturday
Alicia (from England)

oh such really luscious photos of the cats, in all their precious catness.
i wasn't worried about the height. My Emma loved to sit in the solarium window when she was a year; there were screens and it was on the third floor. Yes. You can guess where this is going. One day, I was out for 30 minutes and the landlady had someone come and take out the screens while I was gone. I didn't notice that Emma was not around.I had only been home a few minutes. The door rang. It was the maiilman. He asked, "Is this your cat? It came flying out of the third floor window, and landed in the bushes. It's fine, just a bit wobbly."
I looked. OMG. Emma. How did you get out of the window? I took her up the stairs and saw the screens were removed.
It took her 20 years to use up all 9 lives.
spring? what is that? been so long, I forgot what it is.
luscious photos.

LOL but Emma was very lucky! Spring will be sprung on us suddenly as always.

yes, lucky so many times.
She got catnapped once in Montreal after jumping from our ledge to the house next door. When I put an ad in the paper stating our address with a lost cat, she mysteriously appeared at our doorstep.
And raccoons in Massachusetts.

I look forward to your CAT Saturday all week. Is that Gris Gris in the tree branches surrounded by snow? I'd frame that one.
My son loves parcour but I've never heard a cat jumping used with that word. I'll have to adopt that idea.
I'm praying for the 10 week old kitten. Went and looked at the NY site you are taking care of, good job. It definitely looks professional and inviting at the same time.
I had to take my glasses off the 2nd try to make sure I saw those numbers correctly. Here's hoping it works this time.

Faith, thanks so much. Yes, it's Gris Gris in the tree, a low lying cedar by the porch.

As always, I love the photos and captions. The cat's personalities really shine through your(their) words. They're starting to feel like family.

Ah, that's so sweet! They're all such characters.
