What I'm Reading This Week- July 10, 2011- Sex and Elephants
Quote de jour
"A book burrows into your life in a very profound way because the experience of reading is not passive."
~Erica Jong
It's double your pleasure day. There are two book reviews here and one for cat lovers at www.CatWisdom101.com

José Saramago, the Portuguese Nobel Laureate who died last June, wrote The Elephant's Journey, a lyrical story based on a true events and published posthumously. in 1551,João III of Portugal gave an usual wedding gift to Archduke Maximilian and his bride. An elephant named Solomon(later suleiman) was walked from Portugal to Spain, then by boat to Italy and through the Alps to Austria. This book recounts his fable-like journey with his mahout or handler. It's a slim book, easily read on a summer's afternoon and guaranteed transport you to another world.
Another quick read is Sugar In My Bowl, a racy, new (and first) anthology by Erica Jong. It features some of the best and brightest women writing today. What a pleasure to read well written words that also curls toes. The mix of short stories, poetry, essays and graphic arts hits all the sweet spots. Erica Jong's contribution is a short story with the best description of a kiss. Evah! I've loved the fearless Ms. Jong since her Fear of Flying days, and when she friended me on Facebook, I rushed out to get my hands on a copy. She also has red hot new website Ericajong.com

Talk about a hard act to follow. My weekly stack of mags paled by comparison, but I enjoyed the cheeky juxtaposition of titles. New York Magazine's cover how I feel about summer. Are we having fun yet?
