The City That Never Sleeps

As we transition towards the end of the week and into the weekend, the media is focusing on the 9/11 anniversary with greater fervor.  This odd perspective of the New York skyline was taken in Tarrytown N.Y., located 24 miles from Manhattan. I moved north of  the city five weeks before 9/11 and over the past ten years have photographed the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline from various points along the river.  Every time, I spot the pointy spire of the Empire State Building and my eyes wander to a spot further to the right where the Twin Towers used to stand.  Still after all these years, I expect to see them. One day over the next two years, I'll look up and the empty spot will be filled.

In this image, Manhattan shimmered in the distance like a dream, close enough to imagine but too far away to touch. Known as the city that never sleeps, it reminds me of a container for all our wishes and dreams. We can imagine them hazy in our mind, but no dream comes true without methodical action, taking us closer step by step until we can touch it. Sweet dreams.

What a great photo....interesting composition with the tracks, poles and the mysterious city in the hazy distance. As "quiet" a photo as it is, there's still a sense of energy; the energy that is and will always be NYC.

It's amazing how New York exudes an energy even from over twenty miles away.

Fascinating photo. Makes NYC look like the mirage of some mythical city from the past. I sometimes think of NYC that way, having grown up there and moved away so many years ago.

It's by far the oddest one of the city I've taken and yes, mirage-like comes to mind.
