Novels:The Buddha In The Attic & We The Animals

“The helpful thought for which you look
Is written somewhere in a book.”
~Edward Gorey

I'm paying homage to writer, illustrator Edward Gorey at my other blog CatWisdom101.com today by whipping up a special photo quote de jour.

I did the unthinkable. I read one of the best books ever and returned it to the library without photographing it. Read in one sitting, The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka took my breath away. I felt waves of gratitude for her gift of storytelling. All superlatives fit this recent bestseller about Japanese mail-order brides who leave everything familiar behind to begin new lives in 1920s America with men they've never met.  I loved it so much I just may have to buy a copy and read it again. Another thin  novel is the powerful
debut We The Animals by Justin Torres. This young writer's strong original voice mesmerizes with this semi-autobiographical, hardscrabble coming-of-age story of three half Latino brothers. Even his website wows. Justin Torres It goes to show you spare muscular writing doesn't need to be plumped up to 400 pages or even 300. Both of these novels are of novelette length.

My favorite of this week's magazines is Rolling Stone and their double cover. I can't wait to see the Scorsese directed doc on George Harrison.

I'm with you - I'm eagerly awaiting that documentary on George Harrison. The Rolling Stone cover brought back so many memories of how his music, and the Beatles, enriched my life.
