Freedom Tower Revisited
After ten years of living near New York, I still feel a visceral shock when I see the gaping hole of the former World Trade Center site. On a recent misty evening, I chanced upon the rising Freedom Tower disappearing into the fog. The jumbo American flag was my only tip off that the tower loomed ahead. Architecturally, it's a sleek and sensuous building, but no matter how hard I try to like it, it feels sad. I thought maybe if I turned an image into art it might re-frame the experience? Thoughts?

Layla, as a fellow Canadian, I would like to add to this conversation. The result of 911 is felt by Americans, Canadians, and all other countries as the people who paid the price for that terrorist act came from our global community. This said, the Americans are left with the devastation and with the knowledge that it was their country that was targeted. No matter what happens with 'ground zero' it will always be the monument to one of the worst days in history. Your response of sadness, I think, is a huge tribute to the people who lost their lives and their families because your visceral response says that nothing can replace the events of September 11, 2001 and the place will always be a monument. As always thank you for a wonderful blog and know that I, for one, look forward to your musings everyday.

There will always be a hole in my heart where the towers stood. Always.

Still sad, Layla.

It is sad, truly sad and will always be sad. Yes, it is jarring to stand at the site. I've only been three times since 9/11. But jarring.

I just saw the plans for the new retail/restaurants area and it'll be interesting to see how they do. Historically, in every country after wars, fires and other tragedies, cities re-build over the same locations.
